Chains

O Holy Night

This is the last verse of one of my favorite carols, O Holy Night:

Truly he taught us to love one another, his law is love and his gospel is peace.  Chains he shall break, for the slave is our brother.  And in his name all oppression shall cease.  Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, with all our hearts we praise his holy name…Christ is the Lord! Then ever, ever praise we, his power and glory ever more proclaim! His power and glory ever more proclaim!

I am very thankful I live now, and not when slavery was present.  However, lots of people are still in chains of a different kind.  And Jesus came to set us all free from depression, despair, doubt – and all the other “d” words that keep us down in the dungeon.

If you can imagine in your mind an actual chain link on your wrists and ankles, or on the wrists and ankles of those you love, you can also imagine breaking those chains and walking free.

And it doesn’t have to just be in your imagination.  Jesus came for this very reason – to set us free.  Read about it here.

Sing this sweet hymn of joy, and walk free…
