Job 38 tells us of God speaking to Job, after Job questions
all of the trials and sorrow he is experiencing in his life.
Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me,
if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone—while the
morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?
Let’s
try to answer some of these questions.
We were
not present when God laid the earth’s foundation. And we certainly have no understanding of how
he laid out the earth in perfect form, setting everything in motion. We can never comprehend it because it’s too
far above our understanding.
We do believe
God created the heavens and the earth by his words. He spoke and it happened. It was that easy and that simple for him,
because he’s the great Creator.
We cannot
comprehend how the planets hang together in the universe, in movement, and how
they keep their bearings and stay put.
And how
can we even begin to count or observe every star hanging in space, or hear the
songs they sing? I didn’t even know the
stars sang!
The point
of these verses is that God is God, and we are man. And that fact alone should bring us great
peace in order to rest at night, knowing the creator of the earth is our
father, our savior, and our Lord.
