Two Choices

November 10, 2012

What if someone gave you one of two options when falling? You could land in the arms of God…or in the arms of your best friend.  Which would you choose?

God’s arms are not visible with our eyes, but the arms of our friend are.  So if we go with vision only, we’ll choose the arms of our friend.  After all, he’s a friend and will do his best to catch us.  However, friends can be finicky, friends leave, friends get sick, and friends just aren’t ALWAYS there.  The arms of our friends can become weak, their arms can drop things, and their arms just might not reach out long enough.  But vision guides us…so we choose the arms we see.

What if we go with God’s arms?  The Bible says God’s arms are full of mercy, they’re not short, and they never fail.  It also says he never leaves us nor forsakes us, and that we can run into arms where we’ll find protection like a refuge in the middle of a storm.

So…when we’re in distress, we always have two options. We can lean on what we see and hope it works out. (Good luck finding that friend who’s that reliable…all the time.)  Human arms fail.  We can also choose to lean into the unseen, as scary as that can seem, KNOWING He’s got us.
Sometimes when all we do is see with our eyes, we think He’s dropped us and left us to die.  But what we don’t see is the place where we’re lying – right in His arms.  And although it’s dark, we can’t stand up to walk, and we’re bruised from the fall…as soon as He’s done holding us and calming our fears, he’ll bring us to our feet to walk again.

And his arms not only catch…they lead. Now that’s a friend for life…
