Proverbs says a wise woman builds her house but a foolish
one tears it down “with her own hands.” That’s a strong statement, but makes
sense. I’ve heard an old saying that if
mom isn’t happy in the home, then no one is (well it was said with a bit more
of a country accent using the word “ain’t.”)
We as women are wise if we build our house. I’m pretty sure this isn’t talking about
using hammers and nails. We build our
house by honoring our husband with our words, our looks, and our deeds. How
quickly honor turns to hatred over time, when we begin to judge, deceive, and
tear down. Tearing down the father of
our children is like taking a sledgehammer and hitting our home so hard the
foundation cracks.
Words of honor, looks of love, and kind deeds really have
nothing to do with rather or not our husband is “deserving” of those
things. Because our husband holds the
place of walking beside us as one and fathering our children, just that
position deserves honor. We can leave his reaction up to HIS father – God. And
we can trust that God will discipline him – it’s not our job to do so.
Being a wise woman comes with first fearing the Lord, not
being afraid of him, but revering him as being big enough to take care of all
our needs. When we really know this, we
will build our house up…not tear it down.
And in fact, nothing can stand against us when we build our house on the
rock!
Lord, please guard my
tongue and heart from evil and teach me to bless, and not to curse.
