Matthew 18:9 might be the most stern verse in the bible
about eyes:
If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it
from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be cast into the fiery hell.
Wow, I’ve never considered plucking my eyes out.
I think the message here is clear though.
Life is no good if what we see causes us to be jealous,
worship other things, go after wealth with greed, lust for what we shouldn’t
have, or condemn those whom we deem to be “below” us.
In fact, a life with an eye that runs toward evil will soon
be our own destruction, and that’s why this verse says we’re better off
plucking “that” kind of eye out of heads!
Our eyes, as physical as they are, must peer into his Word
and then our hearts must yearn for him and his ways, if we truly want to see
how to live abundantly here on earth, and forever after that.
Don’t let your eye cause you to stumble and fall…just look
away and toward Him.
