James 4:10
Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
I did a series of devotions last year on boasting. We honestly are not to boast about ourselves,
but to only boast in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Here we read again that we must encounter his presence in
humility – not demanding, not with a fist up, not full of pride – but
recognizing that he is Lord and we are not.
I suppose most of us want to be exalted, praised, affirmed,
receive accolades, etc. and this is what motivates many of us to achieve, push
forward, and press on to win against all odds in school, on the playing field,
at work, etc. And it’s good to work
hard.
However, if we are seeking fame because we want to stand out,
be above everyone else, and cause others to look as us as a standard, we are
sadly going to be disappointed.
The only way to accomplish much in this life is by humbling
ourselves in his presence, kneeling at his feet, and bowing to his ways and his
love.
It’s all the only way to feel completely whole and complete –
even if not one single person ever applauds what we’re doing, saying, or
creating.
That’s a great thing…isn’t it?
