When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that
it was a delight to the eyes,
and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate;
and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
One reason we all are so disappointed when our specific
prayers are not answered according to the way we wish is because we see mostly
with our physical eyes. Eve did this
too. She saw that the tree from which
she had been told NOT to eat was pleasing to the eyes, so why not try it?
Our physical eyes can deceive us in big ways. We see mirages of water when we are thirsty
in the desert. We see others and the way
they dress or talk and we make judgments in our hearts against them. If we see, we believe, but if we don’t, we’re
skeptical.
Physical eyes and vision are such a blessing, aren’t
they? They are, unless we let them be
our guide even in matters of the heart.
God gives us instructions, directives, and imperatives in the
bible to believe in his goodness even when we cannot SEE it.
Eve saw something she thought God was withholding from her
and she took it, even though it wasn’t hers to take.
And we all know what happened after that…
