Whatever Belongs

Colossians 3 cont’d:
Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.  You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.
All of the things listed in these verses have to do with satisfying our desires.  We are made to enjoy sex and desire it, and to enjoy things in this life that we are given.  However, when sex is in any form outside of marriage it is impure.  When we desire sex with someone other than our spouse, it is evil.  And wanting to amass a house full of more and more “stuff” becomes greed, which is idolatry.
Anything we desire to have and we then obtain it out of wrongful origins and desires will not satisfy.  Before we knew Christ, and those who don’t know him now, these desires ruled our lives.  We desired and we did what felt good at the time.  We wanted and we obtained, and it satisfied for the moment.
This verse says to put to death these things that belong to our “earthly nature,” and the only way to do that is by walking alive in our spiritual nature.
Reading the Word, receiving the Spirit as our helper, and asking God to fill our desires with godly pursuits is the only way to put to death these other things.

And when we do, then sex becomes beautiful and pure, and our blessings become things we want to share and not hoard.
