As we keep reading Genesis 19, we see that Lot
reached Zoar, the little town he fled to, when the angels grabbed him and told
him to leave the wicked city about to be destroyed.
Now in verse 24 we see that burning sulfur fell
from the sky and destroyed Sodom & Gomorrah.
I’m sure Lot and his wife heard the rain behind
them and realized that what was warned was indeed true. And they had to realize how narrow their
escape was, because they hesitated and argued.
But the worst of the worst now happened. Lot’s
wife turned and looked back.
Lot’s wife, up until now, has not been the center
of the story. However, she has observed
her husband open the door to evil, offer her daughters to the wolves, argue
with the angels, be mocked by his future sons-in-law, and hesitate at the last
urge to flee.
Why did she not realize the importance of
obedience, now that everything behind her was being destroyed, just as the
angels said it would be?
And why was she not spared from her disobedience,
when her husband had been spared?
Only God knows the heart of people. We can look at one person and determine that they "deserve" to be punished because they appear to be so bad (like Lot). On the other hand, we may see people as innocent and a victim, when in reality their heart is evil to the core (Lot's wife).
In other words, only HE sees what lies in the heart of man and only He is the righteous judge.
What a story to remember....
