The end of James 1 says this:
Those who consider themselves religious and yet
do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive
themselves, and their religion is worthless. Religion
that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans
and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by
the world.
You want a worthless religion? Then spout off everything your mind thinks,
let your tongue wag in desperation and accusation, and let loose every foul and
angry word that’s in your heart. I can’t
think of a more destitute life to live.
You want pure religion, one that attracts others
and swims in blessings? Then look out toward others, even in the middle of your
pain, and relieve their pain. Those who
are fatherless and husbandless need your attention. And keep yourself from the pollution all
around you. How? By peering into the word and letting it
purify your motives, your heart, and your mind.
I don’t want to just “consider” myself
religious. That makes me gag. But I do want to be a light to those around
me, and a reflection of God’s goodness in my life.
Religion makes people turn away and run, when
religion is mixed with hypocrisy. But
true religion – that which our Father accepts – that which changes a dirty
heart into something clean and free from shame – draws people to Him.
Read James 1 again, and again. And don’t walk away until you get it.
He loves you.
Wisdom is worth pursuing. Anger
is worth forsaking. A crown of life is
yours for the asking.
