James 1:9-11 Believers in humble circumstances
ought to take pride in their high position. But the rich
should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild
flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and
withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the
same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.
Read these verses again. This covers all levels in life. The status we try so hard to achieve – that
of being wealthy – will pass away like a fading flower. And for those of us who are not wealthy by
material standards are to feel as though we are highly exalted when we are
rich in wisdom.
So no matter where we
fall on the spectrum of economic gain, we are either to feel high (if we are
indeed low) or low (if we sense that we are high).
Isn’t that interesting! In other words, God is not limited by whether
or not we have money in the bank. He’s
promised to meet our needs. But he is
limited by our own faith.
Everything we try to achieve physically and
materially is fleeting. Matthew Henry says it like this: “Worldly wealth is a
withering thing.” And yet we seek it,
oftentimes more than we seek anything else.
Wisdom is what we should be seeking. And wisdom comes through hardships and
trials. And hardship and trials produce
a life and attitude that lacks nothing.
It’s so hard to grasp this concept…that’s why we
spend a lifetime experiencing it...until the day of completion!
