John 10 says, The one who enters
by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen
to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of
them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.
In this illustration the shepherd knows his sheep
by name, calls them, and leads them. He leads by going ahead of them by example, and the sheep follow because they
recognize the shepherd’s voice.
I think it’s awesome how Jesus refers to himself
as the Good Shepherd. I can’t think of a more peaceful picture than that of a
shepherd leading his sheep. And to
think, he knows us all by name!
But just as important as it is that he knows our
name, it’s paramount that we recognize his voice and follow him.
If a stranger calls out our child’s name, we
teach him to turn away and run. However,
if our child hears our voice, we teach him to come and obey.
The best way to know and recognize the voice of
the Shepherd is to know his character, and that comes by reading his word.
Not sure whose voice you’re hearing? God doesn’t condemn, attack your character or
shame you. God loves, draws you into his
arms, and whispers his good plans and hope for your life.
He knows your name. Do you know his voice?
