Deuteronomy 4 says See, I have taught you decrees
and laws as the Lord my God
commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take
possession of it. Observe them
carefully, for this will show your wisdom and
understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say,
“Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” What other
nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way
the Lord our God is
near us whenever we pray to him?
When we
follow and obey the Word in our lives, this enables us to take possession of
that which God has for us. In fact, when
we follow his Word, this shows others that we are wise and have understanding.
It doesn’t
mean we understand the mysteries of life.
It means we
understand the importance of obedience.
And that is
often more important than any understanding we can seek to have.
When we
understand that following his Word brings life, and then we choose to obey it,
our understanding is complete.
Maybe we’re
praying for the wrong kind of understanding…
