Psalm
13:5 says But I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your
salvation.
That
conjunction “but” indicates that something precipitated this statement. David is the writer of the psalms and he had
great distress in his life at times, like we all do. He had enemies after him.
But…
He
instructed his heart to trust in the unfailing love of God.
If
we live any time at all, we realize that the love of humans fails at time. When we act unlovely, our friends sometimes
abandon us. When we are unfaithful, a
spouse’s love can sometimes end. But…
God’s love never fails. He loves us with
an undying, relentless love that never ever wanes or disappears.
That,
my friend, is a reason to rejoice in every circumstance of life.
Even
when enemies are pursuing us, when our body aches in pain, when our heart is
crying out in sorrow, we can rejoice because we are loved by a God who embraces
us and makes us feel secure, who heals our every ache, and comes in and bring
joy in the morning – after the darkest of nights.
That’s
the love you can trust. That’s the love
that can cause your heart to burst at the seams with rejoicing, even though
there is a “but…” that precedes your joyful outburst…
