Drifting Away

Hebrews 2 reminds us,  For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it.  For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?

Wow.

Drifting.

Imagine a time when you’ve been at the beach and wandered out in the water, playing, having a good time, but losing sight of the shore and where your parents are sitting.  It’s a scary realization to look up and see that you’ve drifted so far away from the familiar, isn’t it?  It’s super scary for moms to look out and see their children drifting away, so far that they cannot hear their mom’s voice calling them back to the shore.

We have a responsibility once we’ve heard the word of God and felt it speak to our hearts.  We can pay close attention to it, adhere to what it instructs us to do, and receive life.  Or we can lose sight of it and drift away from its impact on our lives.

Drifting is not good. There are dangerous waves, undercurrents, and a lack of resources for safety when one drifts out too far for one’s own good.

God has given us his word, he has placed excellent teachers around us, and gives us ears and hearts to hear and respond to sound wisdom.  And when we ignore that sound wisdom and choose to drift away, we’re in dangerous waters and just might not be able to hear anyone call our name.

That’s not where I want to be.
