James 1:26
Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a
tight rein on their tongues deceive
themselves, and their religion is worthless.
Another stern word. Earlier, we read that we should be quick to
listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger.
The opposite of that is
to let our tongues run loose like a wild bull let out of his stall, where he’s
been pawing at the ground, just waiting for a chance to bust loose.
Keeping a tight rein on
our tongues is not easy. In fact, the Bible says no man can tame his own tongue. It’s a loose cannon, and when shot off – it kills
all of those in its path.
Religion doesn’t save
us, nor is it a badge we wear so that all who see us stop and say, “Look, she’s
religious.” In fact, “religion” has gotten a bad reputation.
However, a person who loves God in word AND deed – who loves others as herself – is one that will
be noticed. That sort of religion is
noteworthy.
This is a daily
exercise, taking our tongue and asking God to tame it, so that we are listening
before we speak – in every situation.
